چکیده
reemphasized a classic issue within political and cultural theory – the relationship between individual human agency and social structure: to what extent do local actions reproduce or transform global structures? Several early accounts of the internet expressed high hopes, not least, regarding its participatory potential and transformative capacity. Could clicks cumulatively change the world? – This introduction first revisits questions of structure and agency in a discussion of the work of Anthony Giddens. The discussion proposes a combination of his structuration theory with the tradition of ‘medium theory,’ which seeks to account for the distinctive technological and cultural potentials of different media. Media always make a difference in the dialectic of agency and structure – a dialectic that is inherently political. This has been witnessed, in recent decades, as diverse social actors from politics as traditionally understood, business, as well as civil society have relied on media both as means of self-presentation and as mechanisms for monitoring competing interests. Next, a brief review is given of previous research specifically about the web as technology, text, and social institution. This leads into an overview, finally, of the present collection of studies that examine the web as a source of agency as well as structure, and as an interface with contemporary politics and culture.

Bodies from the Bog: Metamorphosis, Non-human Agency and the Making of ‘collective’ Memory
This essay is about bog bodies – the preserved remains of prehistoric humans, often interpreted as ritual killings, found in peat bogs across northwest Europe. It considers the production of knowledge about the human past as a complex, relational process implicating multiple actors and traversing the terms of any straightforward nature-culture binary. It argues that theorizations of collective ...
متن کاملTerrestrial isopod community as indicator of succession in a peat bog
Terrestrial isopods were studied in the Dubravica peat bog and surrounding forest in the northwestern Croatia. Sampling was conducted using pitfall traps over a two year period. Studied peat bog has a history of drastically decrease in area during the last five decades mainly due to the process of natural succession and changes in the water level. A total of 389 isopod individuals belonging to ...
متن کاملSimulation study on boil-off gas minimization and recovery strategies at LNG exporting terminals
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is becoming one of the prominent clean energy sources with its abundance, high calorific value, and low emission and price. Vapors generated from LNG due to heat leak are called boil-off gas (BOG). As world-wide LNG productions are in an increasingly growth, BOG generation and handling problems become more critical subject to more intense global competitions and stri...
متن کاملMethanogenesis In Mclean Bog, An Acidic Peat Bog In Upstate New York: Stimulation By H2/CO2 In The Presence Of Rifampicin, Or By Low Concentrations Of Acetate
Acidic peat bog soils produce CH4 and although molecular bio-logical studies have demonstrated the presence of diverse methano-genic populations in them, few studies have sustained methano-genesis by adding the CH4 precursors H2/CO2 or acetate, and few indigenous methanogens have been cultured. McLean Bog is a small (ca. 70 m across), acidic (pH 3.4–4.3) Sphagnum-dominated bog in upstate New Yo...
متن کاملMethanoregula boonei gen. nov., sp. nov., an acidiphilic methanogen isolated from an acidic peat bog.
A novel acidiphilic, hydrogenotrophic methanogen, designated strain 6A8(T), was isolated from an acidic (pH 4.0-4.5) and ombrotrophic (rain-fed) bog located near Ithaca, NY, USA. Cultures were dimorphic, containing thin rods (0.2-0.3 μm in diameter and 0.8-3.0 μm long) and irregular cocci (0.2-0.8 μm in diameter). The culture utilized H(2)/CO(2) to produce methane but did not utilize formate, a...
